The former owner of Little Egypt Golf Cars asked the Marion County Board Tuesday night to provide an update on an Illinois Department of Revenue investigation into the Supervisor of Assessments office.
Neil Smith, in public comment, noted there had been no improvement in the office since January when Supervisor of Assessments Mark Miller was kept in the position on a split vote of the board. Smith says the lack of action is costing businesses a lot of money. He promised the business group would take their own action against Miller if the board didn’t correct the problems.
Board Chair Steve Whritenour said he would be contacting the Illinois Department of Revenue for an update that would be given to the board in October. He says changes to bring assessment levels up to date are on hold until Miller retires in December.
“I have to honor what the county board voted back in January,” Whritenour said. “They wanted to keep him in office, and he stated that he’s going to be here through December. We are honoring that, but at the same time, it’s hard to fix something if the person that’s in charge doesn’t really want to fix the problem.”
Whritenour says work is underway to find a replacement for Miller once he retires. He doesn’t want Miller to stay around any longer than December.
