The Salem Community High School Board approved its tentative budget Monday night.
Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering says the budget is flat.
“We do show minor deficits in the education fund and the transportation fund,” Detering said. “Both of those may wind up being surplus budgets depending on what expenditures are made and what costs for food and fuel turn out to be. We do have a surplus of about $25,000 in our building fund. Any surplus that we have in any of those funds are going to be used to cash flow the projects that we have coming up in the summer of 2027.”
And the board began discussion of those improvements. Detering is recommending a large replacement of floor tiles.
“Some of the tiles are still the original nine by nine tiles in classrooms. We’re looking at upgrading with some different flooring that would go over the top of some of those nine by nine tiles. It would still be a free floating floor. In some of the classrooms, we’d look at replacing the floor tiles that have been there. Some of them go as far back as the 90’s.”
Detering says the asbestos tiles will not be disturbed with a new floor placed on top of them so the expensive abatement to remove the asbestos can be avoided.
