The Salem City Council has voted down a series of motions that would create a nonprofit city foundation. Mayor Nic Farley said the action was to clear any intention to move forward with the foundation after earlier discussion.
“This was not something that we had any competition with any other agency like the Salem Greater Area Foundation,” Farley said. “This was something where we had found some grants specifically for EMA that were tied to nonprofits. We were trying to create a foundation to help get some grants that municipalities weren’t necessarily there for but nonprofits could get. With EMA being housed by the county, we no longer needed this foundation to facilitate that.
Farley notes moving forward would have started to create expenses and paperwork for the city. He doesn’t see the foundation coming up again in the future.
