Juanita M. Hofstetter, age 95, of Salem, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at Twin Willows Nursing Center in Salem.
She was born on February 8, 1931, in Elkville, Illinois, the daughter of William and Melba (Hartsock) Spangler. She married Robert Hofstetter on November 22, 1951, in Elkville, Illinois and he preceded her in death on June 25, 2017.
Juanita devoted her life to her family and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Before marrying and raising her family, she worked as a substitute teacher, taught physical education, and was employed at S.S. Kresge. Throughout her life, she was known for her servant’s heart and was always willing to help wherever she was needed.
A faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Salem, Juanita dedicated countless hours serving her church and community. She was an active volunteer with the Hospital Auxiliary and the American Red Cross, where she participated in numerous blood drives. While her husband was serving as Commanding Officer during a squadron deployment to Vietnam, Juanita became a source of strength and encouragement to the wives of fellow Marines, affectionately serving as a “Den Mother” to those whose husbands were deployed. Her compassion, generosity, and unwavering support touched many lives.
She is survived by her daughter, Debra Hofstetter of Salem; sons, Robert E. Hofstetter Jr. of Springfield and Mark Alan Hofstetter and wife Tracy of Davidson, NC; grandchildren, Heather, Mat, Rachel, Derrick and Haley; nine great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brother, Billy Spangler; sister, Rosemary Harlow.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 17, 2026, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Salem, with Rae DeLao officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem. Interment will follow at East Lawn Cemetery in Salem.
