Salem Mayor Nic Farley has signed a proclamation declaring March 29th as Vietnam Veterans Day to recognize, honor, and thank the Vietnam War veterans for their service.  The war stretched from 1955 to 1975.

The commemoration honors nine million Americans, approximately 7.2 million that are still living today, that served in-country, in-theater, or were stationed elsewhere that answered the call of duty.

Over 9,000 organizations across America have joined with the Department of Defense as a Commemorative Partner, including all 80 Illinois chapters of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

March 29th, 1975 is the last day that US troops were on the ground in Vietnam.
