A 20-year-old Salem man died in a motorcycle-SUV crash at the Illinois Route 37-Tonti Road intersection just north of Salem Tuesday night.

Marion County Coroner Claude Howell pronounced the man dead at the scene.   His name has not been released pending notification of relatives.

Initial information indicates the motorcyclist was traveling northbound on Route 37 when it collided with an SUV traveling eastbound on Tonti Road.  A stop sign for Tonti Road traffic is at the intersection.  The three occupants of the SUV were all transported to Salem Township Hospital via United Medical Response for treatment of apparent minor injuries.

Howell said the victim was thrown into a nearby field after impact.  The front passenger-side SUV tire was knocked off.

The Salem Fire Protection District assisted the victims at the scene.  Kinmundy-Alma firemen provided lighting of the scene.

The crash was reported at 8:27 Tuesday night.   Both Illinois Route 37 and Tonti Road were closed to traffic until after one Wednesday morning for cleanup and an Illinois State Police accident reconstructionist’s investigation.
