Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse has released the names of the two men killed when attempting to cross Broadway east of I-57.
Hayse says 58-year-old James Carter of the Rose Lane Apartments in Mt. Vernon was killed Friday night when trying to cross the 4200 block of Broadway and Robert Bryan of Carrier Mills was killed Monday morning when attempting to cross the 4300 block of Broadway.
Both Carter and Bryan were taken to nearby Crossroads Community Hospital where they were pronounced dead after resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful in the emergency room. Hayse says both died as a result of multiple injuries and blunt force trauma.
State Police are handling the Friday night crash. Preliminary information indicates a car driven by 41-year-old Christopher Carter of Mt. Vernon was traveling east on Broadway near 42st Street when the pedestrian walked into the roadway and was struck. State Police say the driver of the car immediately stopped after the collission. They report the crash investigation remains active.
Mt. Vernon Police Chief Trent Page says his department with assistance of an accident reconstructionist is handling the Monday morning fatality. He reports the only information being released on the Monday incident is that the vehicle that struck Bryan was traveling eastbound.
Page notes it is not unusual for people to try and cross the busy four lane roadway on foot, especially from the Rose Lane Apartments to get to the businesses on the other side of Broadway. He encourages those who need to cross the highway on foot to do so at the crosswalks with the assistance of traffic control devices. Page encourages drivers to avoid distractions that may cause them not to see a pedestrian.
