The Kinmundy Board of Alderman has banned the sale of both natural and synthetic kratom. The board noted a Marion County Board committee had tabled their ordinance when receiving requests to keep natural kratom available for medicinal purposes. It was also noted the federal government was only working to ban the synthetic substance. However, the board unanimously went ahead and banned both the natural and synthetic substance noting no knowledge of anyone using the substance for medicinal purpose locally. No businesses currently sell the substance in Kinmundy.
The board had considerable discussion on the feral cat problem in the city, noting areas were 20 to 50 cats are currently located. Discussion included using the $5,000 set aside for this year’s community project in the budget to begin a trap-spay-neuter-release program. They also want to learn more about a possible county spay and neutering program that is being proposed for next year’s budget. It was also suggested donations could be sought to pay for the program similar to the Salem Animal Control facility. No action will be taken until it is known if there will be a county wide effort to provide spaying and neutering.
The board was introduced to new part-time police officer Steve Mulvaney. He is currently on probationary status, but if all works out he could replace Joe Duffy as chief when he retires October 1st.
The board also agreed to purchase signs for the main entrances to the city to warn soliciting is not allowed without a city permit. The board complained about solar system salesmen going door to door and in some cases refusing to leave.
A $75 fee was implemented for residents who request the city water department to handle an after-hours problem.
