A 30-year-old Louisiana man was struck and killed by a car while walking in the passing lane of I-64 seven miles east of Mt. Vernon early Friday morning.
Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse pronounced Travon Thomas dead on the scene from blunt force trauma due to a motor vehicle crash.
Hayse says Thomas’ wife indicated her husband was walking back to Mt. Vernon after their car ran out of gas. Hayse says Thomas was walking in the passing lane when he was hit by a mid-size car.
State Police have not released details on how the crash occurred or who was driving the car involved. They say the crash is still under investigation.
The eastbound lanes of I-64 were closed for an investigation, and traffic was diverted onto Illinois Route 37 from shortly after the crash at 4:06 a.m. Friday until approximately 8 a.m.
