A 23-year-old homeless Salem man faces three criminal charges in connection with a Tuesday night incident where a Salem Police officer received a knee injury.

Ivan Weibrecht was formally charged in Marion County Court Wednesday with aggravated battery to a police officer, resisting arrest, and criminal trespass to state-supported land.  The bond was set at $15,000.  Weibrecht had a public defender appointed to represent him.

Salem Police had originally gone to an area under a bridge over Town Creek on North Jefferson where Weibrecht is believed to have been staying.  He had been ordered not to be in the area as early as last October.

In the altercation that followed, Weibrecht reportedly kicked one officer in the leg.  As two officers tried to handcuff him, he allegedly pulled away when told to put his hands behind his back.  During the process, one of the officers sustained the injury.

Salem Police Chief Kyle Ambuehl says the officer was treated and released at Salem Township Hospital.
