A 36-year-old Salem man has been arrested for aggravated battery to a police officer and disorderly conduct after an alleged altercation with a Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy outside Biggie’s on Route 161 and I-57.
Deputies say they were called Tuesday night after a man later identified as James Phillips of Jeanne Drive allegedly was sitting outside Biggies being belligerent. Phillips’s face was reportedly bloody and his car was heavily damaged.
Centralia Police was looking for Phillips in connection with a parked vehicle being struck in a hit-and-run crash in the 700 block of Cormick Street. Centralia Police have added tickets for leaving the scene of a crash, operating an uninsured vehicle, and failure to obey a yield sign.
Phillips was checked for injuries by United Medical Response before being taken to the Marion County Jail.
In the aggravated battery charge filed Wednesday in Marion County Court, he is accused of striking a deputy in the chest with his hands. The disorderly conduct charge claims he screamed in such a manner to alarm the owner of Biggies and provoke a breach of the peace.
The bond was set at $5,000. He was later released on $500 cash bond. As a condition of the bond, Phillips was ordered to have no contact with Biggies. The public defender was appointed to represent him.
