The Salem Community High School Board has approved an amendment to its performance contract with Ameresco to include a renovation of the kitchen and cafeteria area this summer.

Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering says the cost of the project is $ 2.6 million dollars.  It includes the replacement of the kitchen equipment as well as removing and replacing the current ceiling that contains asbestos and will require a special contractor.   The outside refrigerator and freezer will be removed and replaced with one twice its size.

Detering says the work will begin after school ends in May with a goal of having everything completed by the start of school in August.   He notes all of the old equipment will be placed into storage in case some of the new equipment doesn’t arrive in time so it can temporarily be placed back into service.

The board set the last day of student attendance for the spring for Tuesday, May 23rd, with a teacher workshop to end the year on May 24th.   School will resume in the fall for teachers on Wednesday, August 16th, with the first day for students on Thursday, August 17th.   There will once again be a two-week Christmas break and one week Easter break.

The board re-employed non-tenured teachers Hope Kasten, Ashley Bachman, Dakota Koehnke, Barth Bookhout, Brendan (Pete) Colclasure, Kendra Henderson, Megan Molenhour, Kyla Motch, Vanessa Randolph, Lillie Risley, Mindy Veach, and Allison West.

The board hired Haylee Helm as an assistant volleyball coach.   Brenden Boles and Ricky Huge were approved as volunteer assistant coaches.
