A Polar Plunge will be held Friday afternoon at Centralia High School.
The event in the back parking lot of the school to benefit the Special Olympics is sponsored by the high school and the Centralia Police Department’s FOP.
School Resource Officer Micky Jader is coordinating the effort which will also include three food trucks, gaga pits and other games, inflatables, and a craft fair featuring at least ten booths.
The event will run from three to seven Friday afternoon, with the highlight being the plunge into a pool that has been set up in the parking lot. Jader says that just to make sure the water is cold enough, they have bags of ice on hand to throw into the water.
“Around 13 members of the Centralia Police Department plunging, a few Illinois State Police guys coming out to plunge, a few guys from Mission Centralia will come out to plunge, and maybe around 10 or 15 students to plunge. It’s coming together a lot better. It was a little harrowing at first when it was further away, but the closer we got the more notoriety we got.”
Those plunging either made a $100 pledge or had that much raised on their behalf.
Through Wednesday, more than $4,500 in donations have been pledged online and more than $1,000 raised in cash and checks at Centralia High School.
