A strong storm system that crossed the country brought high winds and heavy rains to South Central Illinois on Friday.
The Alma Weather Station recorded a top wind gust of 53 miles per hour at 3:22 Friday afternoon. The Salem Water Plant recorded a two-day rain total from the storm of 2.15 inches while the Centralia Water Plant recorded a two-day rain total of 1.8 inches. One gate of Raccoon Lake was open seven feet to get rid of excess water, while the Salem Reservoir topped out at more than 12 inches over the spillway.
There were three reports of vehicles getting stranded in flood waters that covered some low lying roads. Fortunately, everyone in the vehicles got out without injury. The Centralia Fire Protection District was called to assist with vehicles in high water in the 600 block of Burge Road and on Norton Road. Another vehicle was submerged on Brick Hill Road.
Centralia City Firemen reported a large tree limb crashed into a garage at the Robert Caswell home in the 900 block of East Noleman crushing it. Centralia city firemen were also called out to downed power lines in the 700 block of Country Club Road, Randolph Drive, 1100 block of North Maple, and the 500 block of North Lincoln. Most of the lines were brought down by tree limbs.
Odin Firemen were called out to a report of a carport turned up on its end by the strong winds at the Al and Mary Minor home at 301 West Chestnut. The hood of a Jeep was damaged. Odin firemen were also called to a power pole that broke off and a meter loop pulled from a home in the 100 block of Sugg Street.
Kinmundy-Alma Firemen were called to 112 West 2nd in Kinmundy when a trampoline was blown into a power line. Ameren was called out to make repairs. A power pole fell in the 1700 block of Ullman Road near Ross Road in rural Centralia. The Centralia Fire Protection District and Tri-County Electric were called. A power line fell across Kell Road between Stuber and Foxville Road. The Marion County Sheriff’s Department reported numerous trees and large limbs down in various locations.
