Sandoval Village Board discusses library needs to get open

The Sandoval Village Board heard an update at their meeting this week on efforts by the Library Board to get the new library open.

Village Administrator LeAnn Speicer says November is being targeted for opening, but the library workers still have to finalize policies and will have to have 80 percent of their book collection cataloged before they can become part of the Heartland Library System.

The library board is asking the village to join the share program that would allow Sandoval residents to borrow books from member libraries throughout a large part of the state.  Speicer says the village board is fully supportive of picking up the $7,000 cost since library revenues are limited.    Spiecer notes the library will only receive about $3,000 in property tax money.   There was a discussion of creating a Friends of the Library organization to help with fundraising.

Library Board Chair Stacy Shuler and Librarian Sierra Lyons along with several other board members were in attendance for the discussion with the village board.

In other action, the Sandoval Village Board approved a new three-year contract with the Laborer’s Union that represents eight village works.  They will receive a three-percent raise over the three-year period along with a $500 uniform allowance.

The new Sandoval water tower has now been partially filled, but still needs to be sterilized before being put online.

The board is getting a quote on costs to put together a comprehensive plan.  Speicer says it would include a utility assessment.   She’s hoping to begin work within a year to get plans in place before several long-term employees retire.
