Salem Police have arrested a 23-year-old Salem man for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon after responding to a fight in progress with a firearm being displayed.
Robert Metcalf was taken into custody at the scene of the fight at the Country Club apartments on South Marion Street.
Salem Police say upon arrival, there was no active altercation taking place and involved parties had reportedly retreated into separate apartment units. Through investigation, it was determined that Metcalf had displayed a firearm during the argument with another subject who was armed with a sword.
Police say both parties reportedly disarmed themselves, at which point a physical fight took place. Witnesses reported that after the fight had ended, Metcalf re-armed himself with the firearm and proceeded to wave it around while yelling in the apartment complex parking lot, as the other involved party retreated into their residence.
Police say Metcalf exited his residence shortly after the officer’s arrival and was taken into custody without incident. Police seized the firearm believed used in the commission of the offense.
Both parties reportedly suffered minor lacerations during the altercation but declined medical treatment. No charges were filed in connection with the actual altercation as neither party wished to pursue charges.
Metcalf was taken to the Marion County Jail on charges of aggravated unlawful use of weapon, which is a class four felony.
