Salem officials say portion of West Whitaker Street will close September 20th for reconstruction

Salem Public Works officials say West Whitaker Street will close to all through traffic from South College to 100 feet east of South Pearl Street beginning on Tuesday of next week.

The closure is due to road construction that is expected to take about three months to complete.

The work includes realignment of the street so there is a four way intersection with South College instead of the current jog on West Whitaker.  There will also be new storm sewers, curb and guttering as well as a pavement overlay from South College east to near Walnut Street.

Ameren will also have to relocate one pole of its main power line that runs along that section of Whittaker Street to allow for the road realignment.

Guinzey Construction of Ashley is completing the $620,000 project.
