Bond set at $300,000 for Centralia man who allegedly attacked two correctional officers in his cell

Judge Michael McHaney increased the bond for 31-year-old Jacob Erwin of Centralia to $300,000 in Marion County Court Tuesday as a result of two new charges of aggravated battery to a correctional officer.

Assistant State’s Attorney Tara Steele said the incident occurred when Erwin was unhappy another inmate was being moved out of the cell.  After telling the two correctional officers who came into the cell block he didn’t want the other prisoner moved Erwin said he’d take care of it himself.  Erwin then allegedly put out his hand knocking one of the officers to the floor and causing a neck injury that required hospital treatment.   Erwin is charged with hitting the other correctional officer in the lip and eye.

Steele noted Erwin was already being held on $100,000 bond on vehicular hijacking and violation of order of protection charges from earlier this year, but no additional bond had been added when Erwin was charged two weeks ago with aggravated battery to a cell mate.

Steele requested an additional $100,000 bond, while Public Defender Craig Griffin noted Erwin was already not going anywhere with the existing $100,000 bond.   Judge McHaney responded to the arguments by raising Erwin’s total bond even more to $300,000.
