The Salem City Council will be asked Monday night to approve a new Class “A” liquor license that would be used for a new business in the former Pizza Hut building on West Main Street. Rosa and Luis Roma, the owners and operators of the El Rancherito Mexican Restaurant, is requesting the license for a high end package liquor facility that would allow for video gaming.
City Manager Rex Barbee is recommending approval. He noted while the city council expressed concern at the last meeting about allowing more video gaming, he feels there is support to assist a local business with an expansion project.
The council will once again discuss a residency requirement for new city employees. Barbee says the suggested action would require new hires to live within a certain radius of Salem and be willing to relocate to be in compliance with six months of the hire.
The tax levy will be up for final approval. Barbee is recommending a 1.4- percent increase over what was collected on property tax bills earlier this year. The city would once again abate the bond payments for the General Obligation Bonds used for the Aquatic Center and Waste Water Treatment Plant that are paid for through sales taxes.
A request is being made to renew the city’s liability and workers compensation insurance coverage with ICRMT through Kane Insurance in Salem.
Mayor Nic Farley is recommending the appointment of Joy Conner to an opening on the Salem Tourism Commission.
The meeting begins at six Monday night at Salem City Hall.
