Salem Community High School moves forward with getting social worker and purchasing new busses

Salem Community High School continues to move closer to having a social worker.

The board Monday night approved the employment of Allison West beginning with the second semester provided she is able to complete the licensure process.

Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering says the new position is being made possible by the one-cent sales tax being collected for Marion County School Districts.

“The role of the school social worker is going to be as an advocate with students to work in conjunction with the guidance department, but it is basically to help students on whatever issues they are having at home or school or when the issues impact both.  It will be things from counseling and working with them to find the resources that they need in order to be successful in school.”

Detering feels the district was fortunate to locate a social worker since they are in short supply.

In other action, the board voted to purchase six new busses at a cost of $109,000 apiece.   For the first time, they will have air conditioning along with a ventilation system to try and block the spread of germs through the air.    Three of the current six busses will be kept for field trips and substitutes.

The board also approved the retirement of Jeff Malone as JV baseball coach.  He requested to stay on as a volunteer coach, which the board approved.
