The Marion County Board has agreed to submit a bid to purchase the Salem Animal Control Facility on the Cartter Road in rural Kell.
The announcement came from Board Chair Steve Whritenour following a closed session to discuss the purchase of property.
Whritenour said he was incorrect in taking the vote in closed session and then announcing the results. However, he has now released how the board voted on the split issue, 8 yes votes to 6 no votes.
Tracy Murray, Sharon Woodward, Dr. Michael Douglas, Jack Riley, Josh Dunahee, Cody Rose, Judith Meeks-Hakim, and Whritenour all voted in favor, while Brock Waggoner, Deb Reed, Tim McCance, Chris Krupp, Debbie Smith, and David Iossi voted no. Adam Smith was absent.
Earlier this month, the Salem City Council agreed to seek bids on the property. If they accepted a bid, they would use the proceeds to build an animal control facility in town.
Bids will be accepted until early November.
In other action, the board voted to create a fund to accept donations to support the work of the Marion County Animal Control department. It will be run through the county treasurer’s office.
