The Salem Grade School District’s cross country path through the wooded area just north of Hawthorn and Franklin Park Schools has been cleared of potential dangers to runners.
Superintendent Dr. Leslie Foppe says she had initially asked Zach Lindsey to look at storm damaged trees and other concerns to get a price on the needed work.
“He and Micah Mulvaney just took it upon themselves and donated their time and equipment,” Foppe said. “They took out thirteen trees, took down brush, mowed it. It’s just amazing what all they’ve done. They’re not going to charge us. They just gave us the gift, and that’s just unbelievable to me, that they did that.”
The two even fixed a damaged culvert on the trail.
Foppe says there was a question if the district could afford to make the improvements due to its current deficit budget situation, so the gift of the two men will allow the cross country trail to remain in place and for Franklin Park to continue to have home cross county meets.
