A fire has damaged Salem Bowl on East Main Street.
Salem Fire Chief Jim Cerny said they received mutual aid from four other departments in the quick knockdown.
“Automatic alarm came in, so we responded to that. The first person on the scene saw smoke, and then they saw pushing smoke, which means the fire was building. When we got here, the outside metal in this area by the lounge was discolored, so we knew that was where the heat was coming from. They opened that up and went in there with a hose line. The fire appears to be confined to the lounge area.”
Assistant Fire Chief Bill Fulton investigated the cause of the fire.
“It appears we had an electrical issue in the wall that set the wall studs on fire. When we got here, we had heavy smoke pushing out of that particular wall. We made entry, pulled the wall and then pulled the exterior wall, and we believe he have it completely contained.
Fulton says there was smoke damage throughout the bowling alley.
No one was in the building when the fire alarm sounded. Without the alarm, Cerny said the fire may have gone undiscovered for quite some time until smoke was visible from East Main Street.
Salem Firemen received mutual aid on the scene from Centralia Fire District, Kell, and Kinmundy-Alma Firemen. Sandoval Firemen stood by at the Salem Fire Station in the event of another fire.
Firemen first received the alarm at 10:14 am. They remained on the scene until around noon.
It was not immediately clear how long the cleanup would take, so the bowling alley can reopen.
