Unemployment was up slightly in Marion County and across Southern Illinois in June.
In Marion County, unemployment increased two-tenths of a percent to an even four percent. That is down 1.3-percent from last June. Those numbers translate into 16,004 available for employment and 603 on unemployment. The total unemployed is up 40 from May.
Clinton County continues to have the lowest unemployment in the region at 2.7-percent, up one-tenth of a percent from May and down 1.2-percent from a year ago.
Washington County’s unemployment is at three percent, up one-tenth of a percent from May and down one percent from June a year ago.
Jefferson County’s unemployment rate is now 4.2-percent, also up a tenth of a percent from May and down 1.1 percent from last June.
Clay County’s unemployment is now at 4.3-percent, up a tenth of a percent from May and down one percent from last June.
Fayette County’s unemployment stayed stable at 3.8-percent and down 1.3-percent from a year ago.
The Illinois Department of Employment Security reports total nonfarm employment decreased by 550 jobs in June compared to a year earlier. Employment gains were posted in private educat-high services up 250 jobs, government up 75 jobs and construction and professional-business services up 25 jobs apiece. Payroll job losses occurred in trade-transportation-utilities down 350 jobs, manufacturing down 300 jobs, and leisure-hospitality down 125 jobs.
