Bystanders were able to hold two suspects involved in an altercation outside the Lucky Marble bar with Patoka Police Chief Cary Henken after Henken was allegedly punched in the face and knocked to the ground by one of them.
22-year-old Alexander Johnson of Carlyle and 22-year-old Jacob Koelmel of U.S. 50 in Shattuc were both arrested for aggravated battery to a police officer, resisting arrest, battery, and disorderly conduct.
Henken says he first noticed a problem at the Lucky Marble bar after seeing a large crowd gathered outside and then determined a fight was underway.
After being pointed to Koelmel as the man who had allegedly started the fight inside, Henken attempted to handcuff him. During the process, Johnson struck Henken in the face and knocked him to the ground.
Henken says others in the bar then took Johnson to the ground and held him, reportedly telling Johnson you don’t hit cops in Patoka. Koelmel was also taken to the ground and held after he attempted to run when being arrested.
Henken eventually got both handcuffed and held until a sheriff’s deputy arrived to help transport.
While at the hospital with Johnson, Henken had his elbow examined because it hurt and found out it was broken. Johnson was released and taken to the Marion County Jail, while Henken received a sling for his arm until seeing a surgeon on Monday.
Bond was set at $20,000 for Johnson and $12,000 for Koelmel. Both posted bond and were released from custody.
