State Police say there were no injuries in a fiery crash on I-57 north of Salem Wednesday night.
Preliminary information indicates a van lost control because of icy road conditions while traveling in the northbound lanes near the Tonti Road overpass. The van spun into the right lane where it was struck by a tractor semi-trailer that was traveling next to it in the driving lane. After the impact, the driver of the van, 36-year-old Marco Casales of Chicago, struck the guardrail and overturned on its side on top of the guardrail. The van then caught fire.
State Police say all four occupants were able to exit the van safely before emergency help arrived. One was treated at the scene, but declined hospital treatment.
The Salem Fire Protection District was called to put out the fire that consumed the van. Fire officials say the overpass had turned into a solid sheet of ice.
The crash occurred at 9:51 Wednesday night.
