State Police say a 38-year-old Swansea man was struck and killed as a result of crashes on Interstate 255 near Collinsville in St. Clair County blamed on icy road conditions early Friday morning.

The name of the victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Preliminary reports indicate the pedestrian that was killed was walking northbound on the left shoulder of Southbound I-255 to warn oncoming motorists of the crash.  A car driven by 20-year-old Dwight Oregon of Belleville lost control as it was approaching the previous crash and slid onto the left shoulder hitting the pedestrian and the concrete barrier.  The pedestrian was killed when he fell from the overpass and landed in a grassy area east of Black Lane and under the I-255 overpass.

Oregon’s car then struck the rear of a car driven by 32-year-old Jasmine Enlow of Belleville.

Both drivers refused medical attention.   The pedestrian was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit is continuing the investigation.

Meanwhile, the Marion County Sheriff’s Department reports three crashes early Friday morning apparently caused by icy road conditions.   State Police are handling a crash on U.S. 51 at the railroad overpass north of Wabash Avenue where a tire came off one vehicle and went through the windshield of another causing some bleeding but no request for medical assistance.

In the other two crashes vehicles skid off the road near Boone and Hotze and on Green Street Road west of Bell Club Road.  There were no injuries in either of those crashes.
