The Salem Freshman Wildcats basketball team will make their debut tonight at Vandalia starting at 6pm.
The Salem Wildcats dropped both games at the Capital Classic on Saturday. The day began with a 64-40 loss to Olney dropping Salem to the 5th place game at Lawrenceville High School against Fairfield. A game Salem would lose 46-34. In the loss to Olney, Salem only had 1 field goal in the 2nd and 3rd quarters combined as the Tigers turned up their defense. Salem was led by Connor Tennyson with 10, Gavin Zimmermann added 9 and Noah Nix 8. In the loss to Fairfield, Salem once again had trouble offensively in the 2nd quarter with just 1 field goal as they would see an 8 point first quarter advantage dwindle to a 10-point disadvantage by the end of the 3rd quarter. Nix led Salem with 16 and Zimmermann added 9.
The Olney Tigers won their 3rd straight tournament title with a 44-40 win over Lawrenceville. Ian Winkler was named Tournament MVP for the 2nd consecutive year as he led the Tigers once again. In the 3rd place game, TTown trailed by 10 to start the final quarter, only to rally to beat Vincennes Lincoln 50-46. Garrett Gaddis had 15 to lead the Shoes.
Salem’s Gavin Zimmermann was named to the All Tournament team along with MVP Winkler and Olney teammates Arjay Keller and Rex Hallam. They are joined by Lawrenceville’s Bryant Jenkins and Maddox Pargin, Vincennes Joel Sanders, Joey Niebrugge and Garrett Gaddis of TTown, Layne Tucker of Fairfield.
The Centralia Orphans won their 3rd straight Roxana Hoopsgiving Tournament with a 59-48 win over South Seven rival Carbondale. Gateway Legacy won 3rd over Roxana 36-23. Marquette beat Gibault for 5th 58-35, In overtime it was Civic Memorial beating Freeburg 69-66 for 7th place. Southwestern beat Staunton 61-50 in the 9th place game and Jerseyville over Wood River 68-58 in the 11th place game.
Mount Vernon won the Triad Stove Top Classic beating Springfield 71-35 and then Triad 48-36.
The SC Cougars dropped a tough one in the title game of the Mulberry Grove Tournament losing to St Elmo/Brownstown 42-37. The Cougars had a 10 point lead through 3 quarters, but couldn’t hold on. Seth Bergmann and Brody Markley were selected to the All Tournament Team as SC will return to action at home Wednesday against Patoka. Father McGivney took 3rd over Mulberry Grove 76-39, CHBC beat Ramsey in the 5th place game 61-50 and in the 7th place game it was Lebanon over Mt Olive 63-40.
Sandoval won the consolation championship at Elverado over Pope County 65-61. Murphysboro’s JV took the 7th place game over Agape Christian 66-36, Galatia over Elverado in the 3rd place game 53-28 and the Carterville JV won the championship beating Crab Orchard 74-46.
At the St Anthony Turkey Tournament, Breese Central knocked off Belleville East in the title game 44-30. Champaign Central nipped St Anthony in the 3rd place game 53-51. Mattoon won 5th over Rantoul 72-60. In the 7th place game it was Effingham beating Robinson 56-48.
At Cumberland, Newton won the title over Casey 51-47. Marshall beat North Clay for 3rd place 59-55. Dieterich is the consolation champion beating Vandalia 66-58 and Cumberland beat Okaw Valley in the 7th place game 51-49.
Waltonville won the Christopher Thanksgiving Tournament for the first time in 11 years with a 60-59 win over the hosts. The Spartans were led by tournament MVP Kyle Cooper with 25 points. Gage Peterson and Makabe Dever were also All Tournament selections for Waltonville. Webber won 3rd over New Athens 68-55, Marissa beat Odin/Patoka in the consolation championship 48-30. Zeigler beat Thompsonville in the 7th place game 60-42.
Wesclin won their own Tip Off Tournament going 4-0 with a 61-55 Saturday win over Columbia. The Eagles were 3-1 and finished 2nd. Breese Mater Dei finished 2-2 with their 54-50 win over Nashville who was 1-3 and Christ Our Rock played well but finished 0-4.
The Kaskaskian began on Saturday in Carlyle. Pinckneyville opened with a 60-44 win over Okawville. Greenville beat SIUE Charter 69-60, Flora over Woodlawn 68-57 and Carlyle beat Hillsboro 61-44. The tournament continues tonight with Woodlawn and Pinckneyville at 6 followed by Carlyle and Greenville.
Today is the start of the DuQuoin Tip Off. Sparta and Carmi open at 5:30 followed by Cairo and DuQuoin and then Herrin and Sesser/Valier.
The Goreville Invitational also begins with Harrisburg and Hardin County at 5 followed by Benton and Anna and then Johnston City and Goreville.
The Hamilton County Tournament also opens with Edwards County playing Gallatin County at 5 followed by Hamilton County and NCOE and then Wayne City and West Frankfort.
The Trico Invitational opens tonight with Carterville and Steeleville followed by Trico and Red Bud.
