The City of Salem now officially has a new City Clerk and Assistant City Manager.

Tabatha Meador was sworn in Monday night to replace Bev Quinn who is retiring after ten years in the position and a total of 31 years with the city.  She was presented a plaque of appreciation.

“I have been so fortunate to work for the city of Salem.  I appreciate all the mayors and councils I worked for, City Manager’s I’ve worked for, my co-workers, boards and commissions.  I have just been so lucky and I appreciate every opportunity I was given and all the things I’ve managed to learn and the experiences I’ve had and the friendships I’ve made.  So thank you all for the last 31 years.”

Quinn says when she started there was just one computer in the building.  She feels technology has been a huge plus for the community and city.  She says she really enjoyed working with the Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals on zoning issues and seeing things happen.  Quinn says she’s just going to enjoy life with her husband, son and daughter law, and grandchildren in retirement.

Meador has been training with Quinn for the past several weeks.

“I’m excited to be the next City Clerk for the City of Salem.  Bev has served the city well in her tenure in the role and I am excited to move forward and serve the city in another capacity.”

The council Monday night also swore in Keith Austin Schoreck as a new patrolman.   He is currently in field training after completing the police academy.  Schoreck earlier completed a term with the National Guard.

The council tabled a proposal to purchase a new $13,000 camera security system for the west side of Bryan Memorial Park to see if they might be better served to move all of the current cameras in the park to the new system so there is only one system to monitor.  Security Alarm will be asked to present an alternative proposal at the next meeting to be considered.   The city is looking to add the cameras following vandalism in the park.

The council voted to surplus two lots that were part of the former National Guard Armory property on North College Street so they can be put up for sale.

Public Works Director Annette Sola reported work has been completed on the West Whitaker Street improvement project east of South College Street, but the new roadway cannot be reopened until signage is in place and the Illinois Department of Transportation completes an inspection.   Sola hopes both will be completed so the roadway can be opened by Friday.
