The Salem Community Activity Center is starting to set aside money to air condition the gymnasium.

Center Director Marcie Auvil made the announcement over the weekend at the center’s semi-annual Community Garage Sale.

Auvil says the event continues to grow each time it is held, with more than 100 table of items for sale in the cafeteria, gym, and meeting rooms. For the first time, some vendors were moved upstairs.

Auvil is equally as happy with the 550 who paid to enter the event before the fee stopped being charged at noon on Saturday.

Auvil is excited about what air conditioning can mean to the center.

“Wonderful for the volleyball players who spend a lot of time here in the fall. We can have weddings in the summer. We can have a lot more events here if it was just a little cooler in the gym.”

Auvil says the first phase of air conditioning the gym will be around $12,000. She is also trying to dispel constant rumors about the center.

“I keep hearing this crazy rumor that we are not staying open but we are staying open we are not at risk of closing we have a lot dedicated volunteers who are helping we have some ladies and gentlemen form the probation office that help here we are doing just fine.”

Auvil says the garage sales also allow the center to promote other activities held at the center as well as the availability of the gym, cafeteria and meeting rooms to be rented for activities.

The next Community Garage Sale is planned for January.
