About three-fourths of the congregation at the Evergreen Christian Church in Salem was involved in the 14th Annual Serving Salem Day on Saturday.
Pastor Shannon Bopp says the event featured a giveaway at the church, yard crews helping cleanup property, assisted Mission Salem in building a ramp for a resident on Bell Club Road, a cookout at Glenwood Acres, and a cooking team at the church who cooked meals for hospital and emergency services worker. The youth took balloons to nursing homes and played bingo with residents at an assisted living facility.
Bopp says the program is very well received each year.
“It has been really good because even today people are thanking us as they are walking out, which we appreciate that. Also I do the Glenwood cookout, and we’ve been doing that for four years. What’s neat about that is I’ve made relationships with the residence that live out there and it’s been fun having that long term relationship. We’ve even had some people from out there start going to church with us so that’s good to see.”
Bopp says plans are to continue the serving day in future years.
