A big turnout for the revitalized Keep Salem Beautiful Great American Cleanup.
“We had an awesome turn out today. I think we had over 100 people in attendance, 15 different groups/organizations represented today.”
Kelley Predium was one of the organizers. She reported more than 100 trash bags were filled from locations throughout town as there were enough participants this year to spread out from Bryan Memorial Park.
“Some of our volunteers would like to rename “Beer Can” alley to “Fireball” alley. because over 188 bottles of Fireball were retrieved from less than half the distance of the road. We found shoes, $100 bill, the blower from a wind mill, an entire bag of potatoes that wasn’t even moldy.”
Mayor Nic Farley read a proclamation declaring Saturday as the KSB Great American Cleanup.
“Urge all residents to take part in cleanup activities planned throughout the city, support ongoing environmental services and help preserve the natural beauty of our community for future generations.”
Farley was pleased to see a good crowd of both adults and students show up, noting it was quite a change from the five or so who have participated the past few years.
A trophy was given to the group with the biggest turnout. The winner was Hailey Metcalf’s sixth grade science class at Franklin Park Middle School who had 25 participants. American Heritage Girls were second with 19.
