LAS VEGAS (AP) — Reece Beekman and No. 16 Virginia capped an emotional week by going on a late 13-point run to defeat No. 19 Illinois 70-61 to win the Continental Tire Main Event. The Cavaliers trailed Illinois 58-56 when they that run began with 3 1/2 minutes left. Beekman scored 17 points and was the tournament MVP. Kihei Clark and Jayden Gardner each added 12 for Virginia. Jayden Epps scored 14 points for Illinois and Coleman Hawkins had 10. The game was played exactly a week after Virginia football players Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler and D’Sean Perry were fatally shot after a field trip to see a play in Washington. Two others were wounded. Former Virginia football player Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. faces three counts of second-degree murder and other charges.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson scored 24 points and had 14 rebounds as No. 20 Michigan, startled by a wild buzzer-beater at the end of regulation, beat Ohio 70-66 in overtime. Down 63-61 with 2.1 seconds left in the second half, Ohio threw a length-of-the-court inbounds pass that hit the rim. After a crazy carom and a short miss, Dwight Wilson tossed in a floater to tie it as time expired. As several Wolverines stared in disbelief, the basket stood after a video review and forced overtime.Jett Howard added 13 for the Wolverines, who are 4-1. Wilson had 21 points to lead 3-1 Ohio, while Jaylin Hunter had 14 points and Miles Brown 11.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Senior All-American center Trayce Jackson-Davis scored nine of a game-high 17 points for No. 12 Indiana, which closed the first half on a 22-6 run and cruised to an 86-56 Hoosier Classic victory over Miami (Ohio). The Hoosiers were clinging to a 21-20 lead with 7:43 remaining when Jackson-Davis threw down an alley-oop dunk. Tamar Bates added another one, then Jackson-Davis converted a three-point play. Indiana is 4-0 and led 43-26 at half, a margin that grew to 34 at one point in the second half.
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Seth Lundy had 17 points and eight rebounds, Jalen Pickett added 16 points and 11 boards and Penn State never trailed in a 68-56 win over Colorado State at the Shriners Children’s Charleston Classic. Lundy, Kebba Njie and Myles Dread each hit a 3-pointer during a 13-0 opening run and Penn State (5-1) led the rest of the way. Isaiah Rivera led Colorado State (4-2) with 15 points and five assists. John Tonje scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Patrick Cartier added 11 points. The Rams shot just 33% (21 of 64) from the field and hit just 6 of 30 (20%) from 3-point range.
WACO, Texas (AP) — Diamond Miller scored a career-high 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and No. 19 Maryland held off No. 17 Baylor 73-68. The Terrapins squandered most of a 14-point fourth-quarter lead against the Bears, who were playing their first game without leading scorer Aijha Blackwell, who could miss significant time after hurting her right leg in the previous game. After Miller’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the third quarter, Abby Meyers had a 3, Elisa Pinzan followed with another and Meyers scored again to push the Maryland lead to 61-47 with 7:52 to play. Sarah Andrews led Baylor with 25 points.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Juwan Gary scored 17 points, Blaise Keita had a double-double, and Nebraska rallied in the second half to defeat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 82-58. The Cornhuskers trailed 39-36 at halftime then shot 57% in the second half, outscoring the Golden Lions 46-19. Keita scored 13 of his 14 points after intermission and finished with 10 rebounds. C.J. Wilcher had 15 points and Wilhelm Breidenbach 10 off the bench for Nebraska. Gary had seven rebounds. Freshman guard Zach Reinhart led UAPB with 17 points in 30 minutes of play off the bench. Shaun Doss Jr. scored 12 points, eight below his average.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — One of the greatest rivalries in sports seems set up for another classic. No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Michigan will both be ranked in the top five of the AP poll for the 12th time when they meet Saturday at the Horseshoe in what’s known as The Game. The winner will earn a trip to the Big Ten championship game and a probable spot in the College Football Playoff. The Wolverines are coming off a rare win in the series. Until Jim Harbaugh finally beat the Buckyes last year at home, they had won a school-record eight straight and 15 of 16 against Michigan.
UNDATED (AP) — Southern California moved into the top five of The Associated Press college football poll for the first time in five years. Georgia received 62 of the 63 first-place votes in the AP Top 25 as the top four teams held their places after playing varying degrees of close games Saturday. No. 2 Ohio State received the other first-place vote. Michigan was No. 3 again, followed by TCU. The Trojans edged up two spots after a thrilling victory against rival UCLA. The last time USC was ranked in the top five was September of 2017, when it started at No. 4 but spent most of the season ranked in the teens before finishing at 12th.
