More than an inch of rain and some snow during the past week has improved the drought situation in South Central Illinois.
Marion, Jefferson, Washington, Fayette, and Clay Counties have all moved from severe drought to moderate drought according to the Illinois Drought Map which is updated every Thursday. Most of Clinton and Wayne Counties also are now in the moderate drought category with the western third of Clinton County and the southeast part of Wayne County moving into the abnormally dry category.
No area of Illinois is now in severe drought. The abnormally dry and moderate drought conditions are all confined to the southern third of the state and west central Illinois near Quincy. The rest of the state remains with normal soil levels of precipitation.
18 percent of the state is now listed as in moderate drought and 20 percent as abnormally dry.
