PITTSBURGH (AP) — Adam Wainwright baffled the Pittsburgh Pirates yet again, allowing three hits over seven innings as the St. Louis Cardinals cruised to a 13-0 victory. Wainwright, who turns 40 on Monday, improved to 4-0 with a 0.30 ERA against the Pirates this season and is unbeaten against Pittsburgh in his last 17 starts dating to 2016. Edmundo Sosa tripled twice and drove in five runs against Pittsburgh starter Steven Brault.

— Desperate for a victory, the Oakland Athletics got one on Saturday while ending the New York Yankees’ longest winning streak in almost 60 years. Yankees’ 13-game winning streak ended as Frankie Montas (MAHN’-tahs) pitched two-hit ball over seven shutout innings before the A’s held on for a 3-2 win. The A’s had lost six straight and 10 of 12 before handing the charging Yankees their first loss since Aug. 12. The Yankees didn’t score until Aaron Judge slammed a two-run homer in the ninth off Sergio Romo, who got the final two outs for the save.
— Yordan (yohr-DAHN’) Álvarez homered for the fifth time in eight games and Carlos Correa also went deep as the Astros beat the Rangers, 5-2. Framber Valdez struck out seven and walked one over seven innings, holding Texas to two runs and three hits. The Astros have won four games in a row and have a 6 1/2-game lead over Oakland in the AL West.
— Randy Arozarena (ah-roh-zah-REH’-nah) hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning to give the Rays a 4-3 win over the Orioles. The AL East leaders improved to 17-1 against the Orioles this year, including 10 comeback wins. Tampa Bay won its sixth in a row overall and increased its division lead to five games over the Yankees.
— The Red Sox pulled out a 5-3 win over the Indians on a three-run homer by J.D. Martinez in the 10th inning. Martinez had been hitless in 20 consecutive at-bats before going 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Kyle Schwarber also had three of Boston’s 12 hits, including a first-inning homer that helped the Bosox keep their 3 1/2-game lead over Oakland for the second AL wild card.
— Patrick Wisdom backed Alec Mills with two more homers as the Cubs beat the White Sox for the first time this season, 7-0. Rafael Ortega connected for a grand slam against Lance Lynn as the fourth-place Cubs improved to 6-19 in August. Mills worked into the ninth inning of his first win since Aug. 4, helping the Cubs prevent the White Sox from taking an 11-game lead in the AL Central.
— Corey Dickerson’s third opposite-field single of the game scored Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the 10th inning and gave the Blue Jays a 3-2 win over the Tigers. Toronto starter Alek Manoah allowed only one hit through six innings — a third-inning single to center fielder. Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk hit a 412-foot homer with two out in the sixth, giving Toronto a lead.
— Salvador Perez homered for the fourth straight game as the Royals beat the Mariners for the third consecutive game, 4-2. Perez lined a two-run shot off the top of the fence for his 37th of the season. Whit Merrifield led off the game with a homer and Kansas City starter Daniel Lynch fell one out short of a victory.
— The Giants blanked the Braves, 5-0 as Logan Webb threw seven strong innings to win his seventh consecutive decision. Tommy La Stella and Mike Yastrzemski (ya-STREHM’-skee) each homered and drove in two runs in San Francisco’s sixth win in seven games. Webb was dominant in his 13th consecutive start in which he has not allowed more than two runs.
— Will Smith snapped a tie with a bases-loaded, two-run single in the eighth inning of the Dodgers’ 5-2 win over the Rockies. Six Dodgers pitchers combined to limit the Rockies to three hits. Trea Turner had three hits for Los Angeles, which remains 2 1/2 games behind the NL West-leading Giants.
— Miguel Sanó (sah-NOH’) drove in a pair of runs and the Twins wasted a 4-0 lead before downing the Brewers, 6-4. The Twins went back up 5-4 in the sixth inning when Andrelton (AN’-drul-tuhn) Simmons hit into a double play that drove in Sanó. The Brewers’ third straight loss keeps them 7 1/2 games ahead of Cincinnati atop the NL Central.
— Sandy Alcantara (al-KAN’-tah-rah) struck out a career-high 12 over seven innings as the Marlins dumped the Reds, 6-1. He finally received ample run support as Jesus Sanchez slammed a three-run homer in a five-run first off losing pitcher Vladimir Gutierrez. Jorge Alfaro also drove in three runs to help Miami improve to 2-11 against Cincinnati over the past three seasons.
— Justin Upton got his 1,000th RBI and the Angels snapped their three-game skid with a 10-2 thumping of the Padres. Jared Walsh homered and drove in three runs, and Jack Mayfield also had a two-run homer as Los Angeles kept San Diego two games behind Cincinnati for the second NL wild card. Angels start Shohei Ohtani (SHOH’-hay oh-TAH’-nee) stole second to became the first player in team history with 40 homers and 20 steals in a season.
— Kyle Gibson tossed three-hit ball over six innings as the Phillies hammered the Diamondbacks, 7-0. Didi Gregorius (greh-GOHR’-ee-uhs) hit three doubles for Philadelphia, which also got home runs from Jean Segura and Odúbel (oh-DOO’-bul) Herrera. Segura had three hits and Gregorius had a pair of RBIs.
— Michael Conforto’s first career pinch-hit homer was a three-run drive in the seventh inning to send the Mets to just their third win in their last 15 games, 5-3 versus the Nationals. Kevin Pillar (pih-LAHR’) homered twice as the Mets matched their offensive outpoint from the previous four games combined. Conforto’s homer made a winner of Trevor May, who uncorked a wild pitch that gave Washington a 3-2 lead in the seventh.
