The driver of a semi truck was thrown from his vehicle after it was hit by a freight train at a crossing only protected by a sign on the south side of Woodlawn Wednesday morning.

50-year-old Steven Liggett of Waltonville was airlifted from the scene at the Bloomfield and North Hall Lane Crossing by medical helicopter to a St. Louis Hospital for treatment of apparent serious injuries.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies say the Burlington Northern train was traveling southbound at 39 miles per hour when it hit near the back of the cab of the truck.  The impact separated the empty trailer from the cab which ended up on different sides of the track.  The trailer of the truck was used for scrap hauling and was empty at the time of the collision.

The crash occurred at 10:00 on Wednesday morning.
