Selmaville School prepares for $85,000 playground update

Selmaville School Superintendent Robin Brooks says an $85,000 improvement project is planned for the school’s outdoor playground area this summer.

Brooks says all of the work will be done to make it inclusive to all children, including those in wheel chairs. The work will include replacing the current wood chips under the playground with a poured rubber surface that water can drain through but still easy to handle for wheel chairs. Some parts of the jungle gym will be replaced along with the swing sets to make them usable by all students.

Brooks reports the work is currently being held up by supply issues, but he is still hopeful the project will be completed before school resumes in August.

The board moved forward on seeking bids to asphalt seal the parking lot and front driveway.

The board set registration for the coming school year for those entering kindergarten to 8th grade. It will be from eleven am to seven pm on July 26th and from eight to three on July 27th.

Selmaville is starting a Pre-K class this year. Those who have a student who may benefit should contact the Regional Office of Education in Mt. Vernon to set up a screening. Up to 20 students can be accepted.

Brooks says the district has hired Jessica Bryant as an aid for the Pre-K class and is still interviewing for the Pre-K teacher. The board also hired Maggie Purcell of Salem as a math teacher and John Chapell as a new custodian.

Brooks reported the district will end the fiscal year on June 30th with all funds in the black.
