Centralia has a state track champion. JehChys Brown took first place in the shot put at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brian Stadium over the weekend. Salem’s tandem of Caleb Smith and Cole Johnson each came home finishing in the top 10 of their respective events. Smith was 3rd in the shot put. Brown was 3rd in the discus with Johnson finishing 6th.
Also in the finals, Mt Vernon’s Jacob Morrison was 1st in the long jump with Tanner Koontz 2nd in the pole vault. Herrin’s Chris Nelson was state champ in the 100m, Alec Sledge of Mt Vernon was 4th in the 110 hurdles and 3rd in the 300 hurdles. Mt Vernon’s Trey Mygatt was 10th in the 00 with the Rams 4×100 team 7th and Herrin’s 4×200 team were state champs. A couple of state records fell as well with Lincoln’s Garrett Slack winning the 800m in 1:51.48 and Wilson Georges of Bartonville won the 1600 in 4:13.26.
In 1a finals, Flora’s Isaac Stanford was 7th in the 800m, Isaac Teel of Pinckneyville was the state champion in the 1600m with Wesclin’s Gavin Hill 8th. The Wesclin 4×800 relay team was 8th.
Salt Fork and Cowden Herrick/Beecher City tied for the team title in Class 1a with 44 points. Newton was 7th, Pana 13th, and Pinckneyville 15th.
In 2a, Kankakee was the team champion followed by Mt Vernon and Mt Zion tied for 2nd with 34 points. It was the best team finish ever for the Rams. Marion and Herrin were 6-7 with Centralia 16 and Salem 27th.
In 3a, Batavia was the team champion with Edwardsville second.
