In what coach Lipe described as a top 5 win in his 16 year stint with the Wildcats, Salem pulled off a stunner yesterday eliminating Teutopolis in the Vandalia 2a regional semifinals, coming back to win 7-6.
Salem scored 3 runs in the 2nd inning to go up 4-1 on the Shoes, only to see the perennial power chip away with single tallies in the 2nd and 3rd innings and then they would take the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth. Salem trailed 6-4 in the 6th inning when they would plate 3 runs on a 2-run single by Carter Rose and the big go-ahead hit from Charlie Hunter who finished 3-3 with 2 RBI on the day.
Gavin Zimmermann earned the start for the Cats and kept Salem in the game. Nick Gregg came in for an inning of relief before the Cats gave the ball to Griffin Day who worked the final 2 innings for the win. Isaac Williams and Blaine Phillips added RBI.
The Wildcats will get Vandalia in the regional finals after they dismantled top-seed Paris 9-0 to win their 2nd regional game of the week. Game time is scheduled this morning for 11am stay tuned for updates on the game status with the weather moving in.
Also in 2a regional semifinals yesterday at Newton, Flora beat Robinson 16-7, Newton at home over Marshall 4-1, at Breese Central last year’s 1a state runner up Father McGivney is into the regional finals with an 8-5 win over Wesclin.
Today in 2a regional championships, Columbia and Althoff play at Marquette, Mater Dei and Father McGivney from Breese Central, Nashville travels to take on the hosts at DuQuoin, Harrisburg hosts Carmi, Anna and Hamilton County at Johnston City, Newton hosts Flora.
