The Salem City Council has approved a two year extension with the YMCA to help the city provide recreational services.

Jed Casburn will continue to serve as both the city recreation director and YMCA director under the contract.

City Manager Rex Barbee feels the city has been able to offer more programming while controlling costs with the agreement.

He feels the YMCA name is also a positive.

The City will pay the YMCA $58,990 for the coming fiscal year and $61,259 in the second year of the contract. That’s a $2,269 cost increase for the first year of the agreement.

In other action:

  • The council approved the renewal of the city’s health care plan with Mutual Medical at no increase in cost to the city, but with an increase in the individual stop loss from $50,000 to $55,000 before reinsurance of the partially self funded plan kicks in.
  • A home occupation permit for Theresa Russell of 17 Monroe Drive to produce and market baked goods from her home.
  • The council agreed to make some cuts in the fireworks display to stay in the $15,000 budget after learning costs for fireworks would be up 35-percent over last year.
