Helen Frances Smith, 102, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 6:50 am August 19, 2021 at White Oak Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Mount Vernon.
A Visitation will be held Monday, August 23, 2021 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Newell Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A Graveside Service will be held Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at 10:00 am at Wolf Prairie Cemetery in Mount Vernon with Mrs. Gwen Southerd Officiating. Interment will follow. Helen is survived by her sons, Darrel Smith of Springfield, Missouri and Harold Smith and wife, Linda of Tennessee; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was born February 2, 1919 in Mount Vernon to the late John and Lydia Belle (Hayes) Phelps. Helen married James W. Smith in 1939 in Morganfield, Kentucky They were blessed with 53 year of marriage before his passing on April 10, 1992. In addition to her beloved parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Bonnie Smith; and siblings, Inez Harris, Leilia Majors, Edith Ford, and Alva Phelps.
