Larry J. Rainwater, 72, of Mount Vernon, Illinois died at 11:37 A.M. Saturday, July 31, 2021, at SSM Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon.
Larry was an active member of Howard Community Chapel Church in rural Mount Vernon, where he had served as a Deacon for many years. He had worked as an auto mechanic and was the owner and operator of Rainwater’s Auto Repair in Mount Vernon until his retirement. Larry had served our country in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He was a very hard worker, a dedicated and loving husband, father, and grandfather, and will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon with Pastor Eric Ragan and Reverend Merle Fullerton officiating. Visitation will be held from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside by the Mount Vernon American Legion Post #141. Memorial contributions in memory of Larry can be made to Howard Community Chapel Church and will be received at Hughey Funeral Home. Larry was born October 8, 1948, in Mount Vernon, son of the late Lawrence and Marie (Reece) Rainwater. On January 21, 1972, he married Sondra Purcell, and she survives in Mount Vernon.
In addition to his beloved wife of 49 years, Larry is survived by sons, Jody Rainwater and wife, Tawny of Wayne City, Illinois and Josh Rainwater and wife, Crystelle of Maryville, Tennessee; grandchildren, Brylan Rainwater and wife, Blake, Kaycee Rainwater, Brianna Rainwater, Vince Rainwater, Piper Rainwater, and Wyatt Rainwater; great-grandchildren, Liam Rainwater, Kenleigh Hollenkamp, and Logan Rainwater; sister, Mary Scrivner and husband, Brad of Mount Vernon; sister-in-law, Connie Mays and husband, David of Edwardsville; and best friends, Sam and Carolyn Lane of Mount Vernon.
