Dean Shafer, 83, of Bluford, Illinois, passed away at 7:13 pm June 7, 2021 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon. Mr. Shafer proudly served in the United States National Guard from 1959 – 1965. He was a member of Marlow General Baptist Church for over 40 years and served as Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent, and Trustee. He worked for Tri-County Electric for thirty-four years and was a master fabricator and welder. His hobbies and passions were cattle production and tractor pulling. Dean was a wonderful loving husband, father, and grandfather, a great mentor to his family and friends.
A Visitation will be held Sunday, June 13, 2021 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 2:00 pm with Mr. Steve Capps and Mr. Russell Smith officiating. Interment will follow at East Hickory Hill Cemetery in Bluford, Illinois. Memorials may be made in Dean’s honor to Marlow General Baptist Church Building Fund. Please remember to observe social distancing at this time. Dean married Joan (Huff) Shafer on March 4, 1960. In addition to his loving wife of sixty-one years, Dean is survived by his son, Doug Shafer and wife, Karen of Bluford, Illinois; grandchildren, Miranda Brummel and husband, C.J of Salem, Illinois, Caleb Shafer and girlfriend, Breanna Bytnar of Bluford, Illinois, Kolten Pool, Lawson Gray; great-grandchildren, Chloe Brummel, Aaiden Pool; sister, Glenna Mount and husband, Kenny of Kell, Illinois; brother-in-law, Norman Huff of Bluford, Illinois, Denzil Lowery, Jr. of Mount Vernon, Illinois; former daughter-in-law. Tracy Nix of Carmi, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.
He was born March 25, 1938 in Iuka, Illinois to the late Walter Jacob and Wilma “Chub” (Clifton) Shafer. In addition to his parents, Dean was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Lowery; sister-in-law, Peggy Huff; nephew, Jared Lowery; niece, Vicki Maxey; and close friend, Dale Hirons.
