Salem Falls At Unbeaten Carterville, Host Red Devils Friday
Salem’s trip to Carterville ended with a tough result Friday night, as the Wildcats fell to unbeaten Carterville 45-0.
Carterville, now 5-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play, controlled the game from the opening quarter and held Salem off the scoreboard throughout the night.
The Lions took a 10-0 lead after the first quarter before adding 21 points in the second quarter to build a 31-0 advantage at halftime. Carterville added another 14 points in the third quarter to close out the scoring.
Carterville’s offense was led by quarterback Jack Dodson, who completed 17 of 19 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 25 yards and a touchdown.
Junior wide receiver Gavin Johnson was his top target, catching 10 passes for 177 yards and all three of Dodson’s touchdown passes.
On the ground, Jonathan Miller rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries, while Vermandis Miller added 40 yards on just two attempts.
Salem struggled to generate offense against a Carterville defense that has been one of the strengths of the Lions’ unbeaten start. Trey Clark had 48 yards rushing before leaving late in the 3rd quarter with injury. Coach Kevin Greene telling the Saturday Sports Showcase this weekend that Clark, “should be ok.”
Despite the difficult night, the Wildcats now turn their attention to the next challenge as they look to regroup and get back on track.
Salem will host Murphysboro on Friday night for Dad Appreciation Night at Jim Finks Field.
Orphans Still Undefeated With Win Over Columbia
The Centralia Orphans remain unbeaten after another impressive offensive performance Friday night, rolling past Columbia 56-20 to improve to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in Cahokia Conference play.
Centralia racked up nearly 500 yards of total offense, while the defense once again turned in a strong performance against the Eagles.
Quarterback Archie Goewey put together his best game of the season, throwing for more than 250 yards and four touchdowns. Kruz Jackson hauled in two of those touchdown passes, while Jace Brammeier came up with a 75-yard touchdown reception.
Brady Johnson also found the end zone through the air, recording his first varsity touchdown on a 37-yard catch.
On the ground, Ja’Shawn Staples continued his outstanding season with three rushing touchdowns. Staples now has 13 total touchdowns through five games. Cooper Green added another big night for the Orphans, rushing for 118 yards and a touchdown.
Columbia jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, but Centralia answered to tie the game at seven midway through the first quarter. The Eagles briefly regained the lead at 14-7 before the Orphans caught fire, scoring 28 unanswered points to take a 35-14 advantage into halftime.
Centralia continued to pull away in the second half on the way to the 36-point victory.
Columbia drops to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The Eagles will return home next week to host Civic Memorial.
Centralia will hit the road to face Waterloo. The Bulldogs enter the matchup at 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the Cahokia Conference.
