The Salem Elks Lodge has presented Mission Salem and Trail Life Troop 262 with the annual gratitude grant which totaled to $4,500. Mission Salem received $3,000 of the grant, and Trail Life Troop 262 received the remaining $1,500. Mike Hooe delivered the groups their checks.
“This is a grant we get annually, most years anyway, through the Elk’s national foundation. It’s called the gratitude grant. It’s a grant that’s supposed to be used to assist non-profit and charitable organizations within the community. This year we chose Mission Salem and the Trail Life Troop 262. Both of those groups do such good work here in the city of Salem, and we decided it was time to help them out just a little bit.”
Mission Salem, ran by Angie Cartright, is a non-profit that focuses on building ramps for handicap people in wheelchairs as well as other handicap accessibility mobility projects. From 2018 to June of this year, Mission Salem has completed 250 projects in the Salem high area, and 28 projects this year.
“The grant we received tonight from the elks, that $3,000, will pay for materials for about three ramps.”
The trail Life Troop 262 is a religious Boy Scout group with a dozen members, ranging from ages 11-17. Levi Ward, the Ministry Liaison, has the troop’s take part in camping, hiking trips, kayaking trips, fishing, hiking, and mostly everything nature oriented.
“The money received today will help for some new equipment, and also help a few of the boys make some other camps.”
The troop also assists in the annual Flag retirement ceremony held by the Salem Elks.
