A fire that apparently smoldered in a room of a Salem home before being discovered caused extensive damage.

Salem Fire Assistant Chief Bill Fulton says the fire at the Justin Cluck home at 410 South Locust was eventually discovered by a neighbor.  While the fire was confined to just a bedroom used for storage, the entire home received heavy heat and smoke damage due to the fire smoldering for an unknown amount of time before being discovered.

Cluck had left for work around 8:30 Friday morning.  The fire was discovered at 10:50 am.

The cause of the fire was listed by the State Fire Marshall as undetermined, but Fulton says it may have been electrical in nature.

Odin firemen provided mutual aid at the scene.  The Centralia Fire Protection District stood by at the Salem station in the event of another fire.
