Salem Grade School Superintendent Dr. Leslie Foppe updated the school board Thursday night on summer projects.
She says putting a new silicone spray covering on the Hawthorn School Roof after leaks are patched is the top project. Foppe noted a power washing of the roof has turned up a number of leaks.
Foppe says work on the roof and other projects should be completed before the start of school.
“We didn’t do as much as in the past,” Foppe said. “This year, our biggest concern was the roof here at Hawthorn because of all the leaking that we’ve had. We’re still working on some leaking issues over at Franklin Park when the roof project was done there. Other than that, we did stripping of the floors, especially the hallways. They always wax all the classrooms as well. Besides that, we didn’t have any other projects this year.”
Foppe is concerned about the air conditioners at Hawthorn school where one of the units appears to be failing. A further update will be provided next month.
The board held a public hearing on the use of e-learning. No one showed up. The district will continue to follow the same plan for the coming three years. The state allows a maximum of five emergency days to utilize e-learning each year.
The board approved its targeted school plan with a goal of raising reading and math scores.
Registration for new students to the Salem Grade School District will be by appointment only on Tuesday, July 28th from nine to three and on Wednesday, July 29th, from noon to six. If you haven’t already you need to call the school to make an appointment. Parents of returning students that need to drop off anything will need to contact the office to set a time to do so with the office staff.
In personnel action, the board appointed Wendy Morris as JV Scholar Bowl Coach. Kylee Johnson and Madison Burner were hired as paraprofessionals and Jill Newman as cafeteria staff.
