Two representatives of the Sandoval Shalom questioned the Sandoval Village Board Tuesday night on possible space they may have to temporarily host the organization’s food pantry after its facility burned in the fire at the Methodist Church in Sandoval last month.
St. Lawrence Catholic Church has provided the gym of the old grade school but there are issues with the steps. While they are very appreciative of the assistance, Shalom is trying to see if there is a better space.
The Sandoval Village Board offered a portion of the General Martin Building as a place where items could both be stored and distributed. They also offered periodic use of the community room at village hall for any clothing giveaways, although none are currently being planned until the church is rebuilt.
The board agreed there would be no charge because of the work the Shalom does for the community.
The information will be shared with the rest of the group, who will make the decision on if they want to use village facilities.
Organizers say because of three large donations, they were able to hold the regular July food distribution from the catholic school gym, with 115 getting food items. The next distribution will be on August 15th at the gym.
Meanwhile, demolition bids are currently being sought to tear down what remains of the church following the fire. The congregation will then look at rebuilding. The Shalom would like an even larger space in any new building.
