The Marion County Sheriff’s Department was successful in stopping a car that was taken during an armed hijacking in the city of Marion on Sunday morning.

Sheriff Kevin Cripps says the sheriff’s department joined the pursuit of the vehicle when it entered southern Marion County on I-57.   He reports that an effort to flatten the tires with stop sticks in the construction zone in Southern Marion County was unsuccessful, but a second attempt at mile marker 118, two miles north of Salem, flattened a tire.

The speed of the chase, which had reached over 100 miles per hour, quickly dropped to 60 miles per hour and continued to decline until the suspect finally stopped at the 121-mile marker.

Cripps says the suspect from Indiana was then taken into custody without incident and was turned over to Marion City Police, who are handling the investigation.

Marion Police have not yet released the name of the suspect or any further information on the carjacking that took place at the Loves truck stop in Marion.  There was no initial information on any injuries.

Cripps says the chase first entered Marion County around 8:30 Sunday morning.   Jefferson County was already pursuing the car before it entered Marion County.

We’ll have further details when they become available.
