Robert Leroy Vogel, 99, of Centralia, passed away April 23, 2026, at his home.
Robert was born March 5, 1927, to William Leroy and Mabel Lillian (Hensley) Vogel in Irishtown Township, IL (Keyesport, IL). His first marriage was blessed with a daughter, Lorraine Kay. The marriage ended in divorce, and he married Mamie Hawes in February 1965. After 38 years of marriage, Mamie passed away. In 2003, he married Irlene Fortney, and she survives after 22 years of marriage.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Ralph Vogel, and his wife, Mamie Vogel.
He is survived by his wife, Irlene; daughter Lorraine Nottmeyer; grandson Tracey Nottmeyer and granddaughter, Danielle Nottmeyer; step-son Owen Hawes and wife Connie (Reed) and their son Rodney, and a sister-in-law, Vivian Vogel.
As a teenager, Robert worked for Nerviangers Scoreboard Co. After 33 years, he retired from the Illinois Central Railroad.
Robert was a member of the First United Methodist Church. For many years, he helped with the annual church pancake day. He was active in NARVRE, a retired railroad group, AARP, and Kiwanis. He was a Red Coat at the hospital many years after he retired. After marrying Irlene, she had him camping and square dancing. He enjoyed going out for breakfast with his buddies twice a week. He passed his driver’s test even at the age of 99.
Robert chose to be cremated. Visitation services will be held on Wednesday, April 29, from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm at the United Methodist Church in Centralia, with services following at 2:00 pm.
